SAFE AND SECURE HANDLING OF MEDICINES

Section 10:
Transport security for routine medicines supplies

The local system for assuring the security of stock during transit must be followed by porters, taxi drivers or other staff collecting medication from pharmacies.

10.1

Transport of Medicines within the Hospital
The pharmacy staff shall ensure that the messenger is clear as to whom they must make delivery.

Those transporting the medicines shall be responsible for the maintenance of security until delivered to a person authorised to handle medicines (e.g. Nurse in Charge) and the delivery acknowledged.

Medicine orders and other controlled stationery shall travel to and from the pharmacy in sealed containers or be carried by an authorised person.


10.2

Transport of Controlled Drugs by Community Staff
When Controlled Drugs are issued to midwifery, or medical staff for use in the community, these drugs become the responsibility of the person to whom they are issued. Precautions must be taken to ensure the medicines are held securely at all times.  During visiting rounds, these drugs shall be kept on the person or out of sight in a locked car.  Community staff are advised not to carry any medicines that are not essential.

10.3

Transport of Other Medicines by Community Staff
Once issued to midwifery, or medical staff the security of all medicines becomes the responsibility of the person to whom they are issued.

Safeguards for the transport of prescription only medicines, or other medicines with a potential for abuse, shall follow that for Controlled Drugs as above.


10.4

Transport of Medicines to Other Hospitals
The transport of medicines to other hospitals shall be in containers, which are sealed and tamper-evident. It is expected that a signature will be obtained for each parcel dispatched and received. It is expected that a local system will be put in place.
