Patients
with lesions require oral antiviral treatment for up to 7 days after rash
onset. |
Organism | Herpes zoster. |
Treatment | |
1st Line | Aciclovir
800mg five times a day, or valaciclovir
1g three times daily for seven days plus aciclovir eye ointment to
be applied five times daily.
When aciclovir eye
ointment is unavailable, ganciclovir ophthalmic gel can be prescribed as
an alternative and is not restricted to hospital use only
in this circumstance.

Referral | To an ophthalmologist / Infectious Diseases Unit. If there is a red eye or other signs of ocular involvement, an urgent ophthalmological opinion must be obtained. |
