Suspected or proven campylobacter shigella or salmonella infection

 

No antibiotics usually required. Consider antibiotics (ciprofloxacin 500mg twice daily for three days) if blood or mucus in stool, abdominal pain, fever, tenesmus or risk factors for hyperchlorhydria
 
Non inflammatory toxigenic E.coli, rotavirus or SRSVs No antibiotic treatment

Seek specialist advice as antibiotics may precipitate Haemoolytic uraemic syndrome
