SAFE AND SECURE HANDLING OF MEDICINES
Section
22:
Powered infusion devices
POWERED
INFUSION DEVICES All areas which use powered infusion devices must have Management of Infusions Policy and an Operators Instruction Manual for each type of device in use. Practitioners must be trained in the use of infusion devices. The manuals must be referred to for procedures involved in setting up the infusion device and use of appropriate documentation. Powered infusion devices are
recommended for the administration of high-risk medicines and the
administration of low risk medicines to high-risk patients. Only staff who have been
appropriately trained may set up and administer medicines using powered
infusion devices. This includes the use of volumetric infusion pumps,
syringe drivers, PCA devices and ambulatory devices. There are numerous makes and models of devices and each must only be programmed or set by practitioners familiar with and competent in the operation of that particular type. Powered infusion devices must be set up and checked by staff who have been trained in the use of these devices. Syringe
drivers are intended to provide a means of infusing small volumes of
medicament over a long period of time.
Maximum volume is usually limited to 50ml dependent on equipment
in use and flow rates are most often in the range 0.1 to 100ml/hr.
They are versatile because of their ease of use, accuracy, small
size and ability to give programmable variations in flow rate.
It is essential that the operator becomes conversant with the
particular model in use. The
Syringe Driver Record Chart THB (MR) 48 or other approved documentation,
is used as an administration record of prescribed medicines and must be completed by the nurse. When using syringe drivers, particular care must be observed with respect to the position of the driver in relation to the patient. The pump must NOT be placed higher than the patient. The general requirements relating to the prescribing and administration of medicines given in Section 19, Section 20 and Section 21 must be followed. |
